Rotary Youth Leaders Award

Sunday, February 1, 2015

Last Thursday afternoon I had the privilege of speaking with participants of the Rotary Youth Leaders Award programme. Thursday was day 2 of their 5 day programme. The programme will be finishing this afternoon and I wish them all the very best for the adventures ahead.

Along with other parliamentary colleagues representing most of the parties in the House, I was asked to share some personal thoughts on leadership. The characteristics I chose to highlight were:

  • leadership is action and contribution, not a position or title
  • remain courageous and take opportunities that will extend you
  • above all, be true to yourself

As a panel we also faced with a range of impressive, probing questions from the group of young leaders. I am sure they will have gained a lot from the RYLA programme and I am equally confident that they will return a great deal through their community and business ventures. My congratulations to each of them for their commitment and my thanks for the opportunity to participate in their programme.

Rotarians are to be commended for all that they do to benefit our communities. Their motto of “Service Above Self” seemed particularly appropriate for the RYLA programme.
