New Zealand might be at the bottom of the planet but Kiwis are rarely indifferent to the world's problems. The size of the migrant crisis unfolding in Europe cannot be ignored.

To help some of the millions of Syrians displaced by war, the prime minister has announced that, over the next 30 months, we'll settle 750 Syrian refugees here, including 600 people through an emergency intake over and above our annual refugee quota of 750.

The remaining 150 places will be offered within the usual quota.

We’ll take 250 of those 750 Syrian refugees this financial year, and a further 500 over the next two financial years.

A further $4.5 million will be provided to help refugees displaced by fighting in Syria, bringing New Zealand’s total humanitarian contribution to the refugee crisis to $20 million.

National is as committed as ever to improving the outcomes for the refugees, and their families, whom we take each year.
