New Year Celebrations
On April 29, New Year celebrations for some of New Zealand's ethnic communities continued with Wellington's Mutamizh Sangam hosting a Tamil celebration known as Chithirai Vizha.
It came shortly after National list MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi and I hosted a joint Indian New Year celebration at Parliament. It included members from the Tamil, Punjabi and Telugu communities coming together for the first time in Wellington and in Parliament to celebrate the new year.
Chithirai Vizha was a huge night with some 250 representatives from Tamil, Punjabi, Telugu and Sinhalese communities, along with other members of the Multicultural Council of Wellington, sharing in the celebration.
We saw outstanding performances from local singers, but nothing could top the magic of the Vehaara Arts dance troupe from Malaysia. They were truly phenomenal, blending traditional and modern dance movements to a variety of Indian music, including some Michael Jackson beats.
It was a real sight to behold.
Wellington Mutamizh Sangam did a great job to get Vehaara over here. The event was a huge success. They kindly acknowledged me and Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi for our hosting the combined Indian New Year event at Parliament. It was our pleasure.
